Some interesting events to consider:
MOAB PHOTO SYMPOSIUM: An annual photo event in the beautiful red rock country of eastern Utah, over a long weekend around the first of May. Interesting speakers, multi-day and afternoon workshops, attendee photo exhibits, a "PhotoJAM", door prizes, and lively participation by about 100 attendees make this a don't miss trip for Linda and me every year.
ALBUQUERQUE INTERNATIONAL BALLOON FIESTA: Over nine days in early October, the balloon fiesta draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to northern New Mexico. It's worth going at least once, just to see the riot of colors and shapes as hundreds of balloons inflate and lift off.
FESTIVAL OF THE CRANES: A week-long event each November, celebrating the changing of the seasons and the migration of sandhill cranes back to their wintering grounds at the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge near Socorro, NM. The festival includes workshops and lectures about photography along with multiple photo contests, other sessions on birding, tours of the refuge and field trips to area attractions including the NRAO Very Large Array. If you plan to attend, don't procrastinate in making reservations!
